Synopsis:
When several of his relatives who suffered from breast cancer could not be saved, Abdul Mutalib Abdul Hamid was determined to do what he could to help others with the disease.
Now, he and Goh Yan Kun, a fellow student at NP, have succeeded in developing a new technique to diagnose breast cancer automatically.
Working on thermograms, the Biomedical Engineering students
were able to automatically identify normal or malignant breasts without the presence of the doctor. The images are fed into a computer and are then analysed by a program. So far, the Biomedical Engineering
students have achieved a success rate of 90 per cent.
.The project was among those exhibited at NP as part of the Engineering Week organised by the five polytechnics. About 90 workshops and competitions are also held during this time. |
