Report on the 4th Scientific Meeting of the
Biomedical Engineering Society of Singapore 2007
|
Date : Saturday 19th May 2007
Venue: Convention Centre, Ngee Ann
Polytechnic,
Attendance: 107 Participants
including VIPs and invited guests (registrants 82)
The 4th
Scientific Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BES4SM) continues to
provide a local platform for interaction between researchers and students in
biomedical engineering, to stimulate and be stimulated, and to share results of
their work.
Unlike
earlier meetings, the timing of the conference could not be optimised for both
university undergraduates and poly undergraduates. While timing for university
students was fairly optimal - they had just completed their examinations, and
could easily summarize their work since with their project findings were fresh
in their minds, it was not so for polytechnic students. For them, their
semesters had ended almost two and half months back. Nevertheless, the meeting
was an important platform also for them – having encouraged them towards more
rigorous analytical approach in their project and motivating them to produce
higher quality applied research and development work.
Again
the Biomedical Engineering Society (BES) sponsored all direct event expenses
including prize money while Ngee Ann Polytechnic provided the use of
facilities, logistics and management expertise, manpower and hosting the
conference website. Delegates therefore enjoyed highly subsidised fees for
participation, or even free if they were BES members.

The one-day Conference was highly successful, with about 107 attendees (including 82 registrants). There were 3 parallel sessions and two keynote addresses conducted during this one day event.

Conference participants and invited guests
were welcomed by Mr Johnny Chee, the Chairman of the organising committee. This
was followed by an opening address from Prof Chew Yong Tian, Chairman of BES
and subsequently by Dr Lim Choo Min, Director/ECE,
Two keynote addresses then followed. The first was delivered by Professor
Teoh Swee Hin, Professor
and Director Centre of Biomedical Materials & Applications (BIOMAT) at the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS) as
well as President and Chairmen of Board of Directors, Osteopore International,
a University spin-off company. Prof Teoh provided an insight into advances in
bioresorbable scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, the challenges and issues
in developing a platform technology which integrates medical imaging and
advance manufacturing to produce 3D porous scaffolds for tissue engineering of
bone.
The second keynote address was delivered by Dr Peter Lee, Head of Bioengineering
Laboratory, Defence Medical and Environmental Research Institute (DMERI), DSO
National Laboratories. Dr Lee provided the audience
with a rare but interesting insight into injury biomechanics research to augment
performance and protection to combatants
The scientific
sessions were organised as three parallel tracks with judging conducted for
outstanding papers in all three tracks. At the end of the day, Associate
Professor James Goh, Vice President of BES gave prizes to the winners.
The
proceedings of the Conference were distributed to conference participants, and,
subsequently also to the public libraries and tertiary institution libraries
within
The following participants won the outstanding paper awards:

The Fourth Scientific Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society had received a good response. The meeting had served as a good platform for researchers to interact, find out what others are doing and to network with fellow researchers. The attendance of more than a 100 registrants for the conference indicates a maturing of this field and a possible continuing demand for regular local scientific meetings.
There were many contributions from various people that helped to make the conference a success. Funding from the Biomedical Engineering Society of Singapore together with funding-in-kind (free use of facilities) and expertise from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (web submission of papers) were enabling contributions to get the conference organised. Additional major contributions are:
The organising committee had representations from most tertiary
institutions including NUS, NTU and the polytechnics. The committee was
cohesive and worked hard to make it the event a success. Members were:
